Energy Reps |
As the three years research work of the Blewbury Energy Initiative (BEI) working party neared its completion in early 2009,
it was been decided to make the knowledge gained more easily available,
not only through its prize winning website, but also physically closer to your home.
The following have kindly agreed to act as BEI local representatives for the areas indicated below.
Their role will include such matters as:
- Assisting with energy use monitoring aids, to track down how to reduce electricity consumption
- Co-ordinating home energy surveys
- Assisting with community energy monitoring
- Advising on HOME energy savings and where to get specialist advice

Flying Squad |
The Flying Squad is made up of volunteers willing to help
others in Blewbury for medical appointments only (including dental, optician
and chiropody) Telephone (Mobile: 07891-768197). The Flying Squad telephone
is not switched on if the telephone holder is not available. In this case, you
will be put through to the voicemail and you will hear a message which starts
- "Hello, this is the Blewbury Flying Squad phone ..." and you will be prompted
to leave a message. Wait for the beep at the end of the message and give your
name and telephone number and you will be phoned back as soon as possible.
Please speak clearly. Please note that we need as much notice as possible to arranger a driver.
Please note that journeys to the Horton Hospital
in Banbury are not available from the Flying Squad.

The Malthus Trust |
This Trust is available to give financial help to people resident in Blewbury.
The bulk of the money is held in an Educational Trust for the purpose of helping young people under the age of 25 years,
to a better standard of life by education, training, social and sporting activities and in almost any way that will make
them better prepared, both educationally and physically, for the future.

The refuse services include:
Green Boxes for a variety of items for recycling,

The household waste site at Drayton, which can accept a wider range if
items for recycling as well as other refuse.
A site at Redbridge, Oxford which can also handle more specialised items
such as computers, tools and sheet glass.

General Recycling - Green Boxes
Green boxes can be obtained from the Vale of White Horse free
of charge. They can be used to remove a variety of items for recycling:
- aerosols
- Aluminium foil, cleaned of any food contamination.
- All kinds of paper and newsprint, but not Yellow Pages, wrapping paper
or books with hard covers. These can be taken to recycling centres. Shredded
paper can be collected but must be contained within a paper bag or envelope,
not in plastic bags
- Batteries - Car batteries should be placed next to Green Boxes and domestic
batteries placed in a clear bag in your box.
- cans (no sharp lids or edges) and other metal objects
- glass bottles and jars, but not glass sheets, broken glass or light bulbs
- mobile phones
- plastic bottles without lids or contents. Other plastic items can be disposed
of at the Drayton centre
- good quality shoes, clothing and household linen. Place in carrier bags,
not black sacks, on top of, or next to Green Box.
Cardboard of any type cannot be placed
in Green Boxes. This can be taken to the Drayton
Centre. It may also be put in Brown Bins.
Green Box collection is normally
every Tuesday except after Public Holidays when it may be on a Wednesday or
a Thursday. The diary and the Blewbury Bulletin
give the collection days when other than Tuesday. The boxes need to be put
out ready for collection by 7am.
Green boxes must be ordered from Vale of White Horse Waste Management Team (01235-520202) who can also be contacted for
queries and to report missed collections.
Garden and Cardboard Waste Composting - Brown Bins
Brown Bins can be used for the removal and recycling of Cardboard,
Grass mowings, Green prunings, Leaves, Hedge & tree clippings, Twigs, Flowers,
Plants and Weeds (including couch grass, ground elder etc.) They cannot
be used for Food waste (meat or vegetable), Cat/dog faeces, Dust from vacuum
cleaners, Wood that has been painted or coated with a preservative, Stones or
soil, or Tetrapack eg milk or orange juice cartons. Japanese
knotweed must not be placed in Brown Bins. There is an annual
charge for this service.
Collections are on alternate Thursdays except after public holidays.
The diary and Blewbury Bulletin give all brown bin collection days.

Refuse Collection
The refuse collection service is intended for non-hazardous
waste which is not suitable for recycling. No garden waste will be collected
as part of refuse collection. The brown bin
service should be used or the waste should be taken to a household waste site.
Collections are every Wednesday except after Public Holidays when they may be on a Thursday or a Friday.
The diary and Blewbury Bulletin give the collection days when these are other than Wednesday.
Bins and bags need to be put out ready for collection by 7am.

Hazardous Waste
Items such as garden chemicals, bleach, aerosols, paints, unwanted medicines and miscellaneous chemicals will be collected
free of charge. Waste must come from your own household and be capable of being contained in a container approx. 18" cube.

Bulky Item Collection
Bulky items such furniture can be collected. There is a fee
for collection, currently of £28 for up to three items. Fridges and freezers
may be collected for a charge of £22 per fridge or freezer. Bulky items,
including fridges or freezers, can be taken to Drayton, where up to three items
can be left for free. In some cases furniture in good condition can be accepted
by Oxfordshire Council for Voluntary Action who may be able to collect for rehoused

The quickest and easiest way to request removal of your bulky items from your home is to telephone
and pay using your credit or debit card. (Ring 01235-520202 and ask for "Bulky Waste Collection".)
Drayton Household Waste Site
There is a County Council household waste site at Drayton, south of Drayton village.
Apart from skips for household rubbish there are also containers for glass, oil, paper, scrap metal and CFCs.
The Waste Site is open seven days from 8.00am - 5.00pm (until
8.00pm on Thursdays April - September), including all bank holidays except Christmas Day,
Boxing Day and New Year's Day. (Phone 01865-815796)
Redbridge Household Waste Site
The main County Council household waste site is at Redbridge,
close to the park and ride car park. In addition to providing services similar
to the Drayton site, this handles some more specialised recycling including
asbestos, computer hard drives and hand tools.

8.00pm April - September), including all bank holidays except Christmas Day,
