"The Red Lion, the building on the right, has been a public house for a long time,
and serves Brakspears beer.
There is a barn behind the Red Lion, with an old skittle alley.
In 1590 John Rothwell and Osmund Brown were caught playing skittles
"on the Sabbath Day at the time of Divine Service" and were reported to the bishop."
"William Boham inherited the Red Lion in 1807 and had it refaced.
That's why there is a plaque in the front wall showing 'W.B. Nov 24 1807'.
William spent much of his time in the skittle alley. He lived in Bohams Farm,
in Westbrook Street, and created the small door in the cob wall by Bohams Orchard
so that he could be off to play skittles without his workmen seeing him go."
